The primary artwork decorating Snowdon metro station consists in four long murals by Claude Guité, painted on asbestos panels and running the length of the station's four platforms, representing the seasons of the year.

Tragically, two of these beautiful works have been severely damaged by graffiti and by attempts to clean them. About 50% of the panels of the Henri-Bourassa mural and nearly all of the panels of the Côte-Vertu mural had portions obliterated in trying to remove graffiti.

The situation is bad enough, but what is even more shocking is that no conservation work has been done to preserve the as yet largely undamaged works on the blue line platforms, especially given the prevalence of "tagging" and similar vandalism in the metro.

The STM should immediately undertake serious conservation work, such as installing protective panels, to preserve the remaining works from being ruined by graffiti.

We cannot afford to remain inactive and risk these important parts of the artistic heritage of Montreal and its metro system being damaged.
