ORIGIN OF THE NAME
Sir Robert Peel Rue Peel. Sir Robert Peel (1788-1850) was a British politician who served as a member of that state's parliament starting in 1809 and as Prime Minister (1834-5 and 1841-6). It was under his leadership of the Tories that their party was renamed the Conservatives. As Home Secretary (1828-30), he established the London police force, and is remembered in their nickname "bobbies."
