This strictly utilitarian station was the terminus of the original section of the green line, built in 1966. It is centred around a wide mezzanine that provides access to the shopping malls it serves and to the de Maisonneuve exit. The control zones at either end of the mezzanine overlook the platforms, making the station more spacious. All of the walls are covered with beige brick of various shades.

The station is served by two kiosks. The main one is built immediately above the station at Atwater and de Maisonneuve. Situated in front of Dawson College, it repeats the lines and coloration of that building. The other kiosk is a block away, in Cabot Square. This concrete-and-glass post-modern structure serves Terminus Atwater, an important hub of bus routes, which wraps around the park. This kiosk is connected to the station indirectly, via the tunnel level of Plaza Alexis-Nihon.

Corridor to Westmount SquareAtwater is the nucleus of the westernmost section of the Underground City, which links Plaza Alexis-Nihon with Westmount Square. The latter shopping centre, whose furthest entrance is several blocks away from the station, is connected thereto by a long tunnel. To lessen the force of its length, the tunnel's width and height varies along its course.
