Vous pensez que notre pont Champlain fait dur?
Eh bien dans l'Upstate New York, ils ont démoli son homonyme avant qu'il ne s'effondre de par lui-même.
Il s'est écoulé 73 jours entre la déclaration de dangerosité et la démolition.
Un nouveau pont pourrait être inauguré en 2011, les procédure environnementales ayant été contournées de par la reconstruction à l'emplacement exact de son prédécesseur.

ADDISON, Vt. — Lorraine Franklin sat in her empty store Monday evening, remembering what a typical night here used to look like: frenzied parents grabbing a pizza, frazzled workers picking up six-packs, night shift employees loading up on coffee.
But since October, the West Addison General Store here has been nearly empty each night, a phenomenon due not to the economy, but rather a failed span of steel and concrete three miles away.
The Lake Champlain Bridge, which connects Vermont and New York, was closed Oct. 16 after it was deemed unsafe. Its concrete pillars had deteriorated significantly since its last inspection in 2005, and officials feared the 2,184-foot bridge could collapse.
The 80-year-old latticework structure, rising majestically above Lake Champlain, is scheduled to be demolished on Monday. While residents were shocked at the speed and timing of the closing, its poor condition was well known. A local mantra when driving over the bridge, according to Ms. Franklin, was “roll down your window, unbuckle your seat belt and say a prayer.”
Losing the bridge has, in many ways, been like losing a treasured member of the community, and residents are dealing with stages of grief: shock and disbelief have morphed into misery, anger and bleakness as winter has set in.
“Every day there’s the constant pressure of not knowing whether I can pay my bills,” said Lisa Cloutier, who owns The Bridge restaurant a few hundred yards away and has cashed in her retirement savings to sustain the 80 percent drop in business since it closed. “I feel like I’m a ticking time bomb.”
Generally, the closing has hit Vermont businesses and the New York residents who work at and patronize them hard. The bridge, one of only two connecting the states across Lake Champlain, was used by about 3,400 drivers a day who now must travel around the northern end of the lake to the other span, adding two hours and 100 miles to the round trip. Or they are forced to take one of two ferries that run in the winter.
Most of the region’s doctors, along with large hospitals, trauma and birthing centers, are on the Vermont side. Larry Tuner of Moriah, N.Y., said his wife was scheduled for surgery in Vermont soon — which will mean hours of driving or riding the ferry to see her.
A temporary ferry will start running from the bridge site in late January, and a new bridge is scheduled to be finished by the summer of 2011, said John Zicconi, a spokesman for the Vermont Agency of Transportation. Many residents say the timeline is too slow to help businesses that are suffering now.
“We lost our life’s blood,” Ms. Cloutier said of Vermonters. “They lost their life’s line,” she said of New York residents.
It used to take Carole St. Pierre about a half hour to get to her job at B. F. Goodrich in Vergennes, Vt., from her home in Crown Point, N.Y. Now she wakes up around 3 a.m. to drive to a shuttle bus that takes her to a ferry that leaves at 6 a.m. She leaves work at 3:30 p.m., then reverses the trip, arriving home after 5 p.m.
She and her co-workers feel like their lives have been upended — one had to quit a second job in Vermont because he could not get home, and has lost $1,600 in income since the bridge closed.
“I’ve fallen asleep with my head on the keyboard,” Ms. St. Pierre said during a shuttle van ride to catch the ferry home on Monday afternoon.
When the Lake Champlain Bridge opened in 1929, it was an engineering marvel that changed life and business for two otherwise difficult-to-reach regions. The two communities soon became inexorably entwined, and northern New England became much easier to reach.
The bridge is jointly owned by New York and Vermont, with New York in charge of maintenance and inspection. Traffic on the rusting bridge was reduced to one lane in early July. Many residents feel they have been misled by officials, who assured residents that, with repairs, the bridge was useable until 2013.
“I feel they darn well knew there were problems,” Ms. Franklin said. “We all feel we were lied to and our lives were put in danger, needlessly.”
Deborah Sturm Rausch, a spokeswoman for the New York Department of Transportation, said she could understand why people felt that way, but said that “really, nothing is further from the truth.”
An inspection was ordered, she said, after a state employee in a boat spotted a crack in a pillar. The report discovered the problem with the pillars, and the bridge was immediately closed. The next inspection had been scheduled for 2010.
“There would have been no way to predict this,” Ms. Rausch said. “It’s really, really good that this was noticed because this bridge is very unsafe and unstable.”
Gov. David A. Paterson of New York has allocated $3 million in emergency aid to affected communities, and a $1 million package is under consideration in the Vermont legislature.
Diane Lanpher, a state representative from Vergennes, fears that other bridges in the state, many of which are around the age of the Lake Champlain Bridge, might also have potential problems. She plans to have a legislative committee investigate bridge safety statewide.
“This isn’t the only one,” Ms. Lanpher said.
For many here, Monday will be an emotional day. Ms. Cloutier, who will close her restaurant until the new ferry opens, plans to serve doughnuts and coffee for the implosion.
Everyone, she said, has a special story about the bridge — she used to sit underneath it, drink Champagne and soul-search while battling cancer and going through a divorce. Now her cancer is in remission and she recently remarried. Yet the view of the bridge continues to bring her solace.
“It’s like I’m losing my best friend.” Ms. Cloutier said. “I don’t think anybody realizes what we’re really losing.”

Est-ce qu'ils vont le reconstruire selon les même plans originaux de l'ancien pont ?
 J'ai déjà passé sur ce pont dans les années 80 avec mes parents alors que nous avons décidez d'explorer la région des Adirondacks lors d'un périple à Albany pour se diriger vers Burlington,VT.
Je me souviens du paysage printannier qui était magnifique dans ce secteur du parc de l'État des Adirondacks et de cette vallée dans la région de Ticonderoga avant de traverser ce pont.
Je me demande bien en quelle année ce pont avait été inauguré dans cette région ?
Par exemple, je me souviens de l'autre pont du Lac Champlain à Rouses Point pour aller dans les îles du Lac Champlain au Vermont. Ce pont qui est à Rouses Point que je parles, est beaucoup plus récent que celui-ci.
Il a été construit à la fin des années 80 en 1987. Je l'ai vu construire en plus de ça. C'était assez étonnant pour un adolescent à mon âge car je n'avais que douze,treize ans à l'époque alors que nous roulions sur l'ancien pont qui levait ou tournait avant que le pont actuel de Rouses Point soit inauguré.
Mais nous avons roulés aussi sur le nouveau pont quelques mois plus tard.
Pour revenir, à l'ancien pont du sujet. J'espère bien qu'il sera reconstruit comme l'ancien était fait.
