ORIGIN OF THE NAME
Boulevard Saint-Michel
Saint Michel the Archangel, by Guido Reni; Church of Santa Maria della Concezione, Rome
Boul. Saint-Michel. The name Saint-Michel has been associated with this street for at least two centuries, as it crossed the former Côte Saint-Michel and today crosses the neighbourhood of Saint-Michel. Known at various times as Montée Saint-Michel, Chemin du Saint-Michel, Chemin du Sault, and 11e Avenue, it was officially named Boulevard Saint-Michel in 1969.

In Catholic, Orthodox, and Muslim beliefs as well as in certain Jewish traditions, Saint Michael is an archangel who is the advocate and defender of Israel. In the book of Revelation he battles a dragon representing Satan. In Catholicism, his feast day is 29 September and he is patron of soldiers and emergency personnel.
