Born: 1939, in Esneux, Belgium
The Osterrath family had been master stained-glass workers in Tilff, Belgium, for four generations when Pierre Osterrath was born. In 1953 his parents came to Quebec with him, settling in Coteau-du-Lac. His father soon reentered the field of stained glass, and Pierre followed in his footsteps, opening his own workshop in 1967. At the time, most stained glass in Quebec was made abroad and used exclusively for churches. Osterrath helped to create a native Quebec stained glass art movement, working with many of the great Quebec artists of the age, including Frédéric Back, Jordi Bonet, Marcelle Ferron, Fernand Leduc, Jean-Paul Mousseau, Alfred Pellan and Claude Théberge. Over his career he has created over 27 000 square metres of stained glass. He has also worked with the sculptural possibilities of glass. He has been a professor of visual arts at Laval University for over 30 years. He works in Lotbinière (Chaudière-Appalaches).
