Location: Berri-UQAM station, mezzanine This bronze disc commemorates the continuity from the first public transit system in Montreal in 1861 (horse-drawn tramways) to the opening of the metro on 14 October 1966. It was unveiled at the opening ceremonies of the metro. Originally, this plaque was displayed in an upright frame. After it was stolen by some university students as a prank, it was reinstalled in a more secure position, within a large disk of black granite. This bench is now a popular rendezvous point, commonly called "la rondelle" (the hockey puck) or "la pilule" (the pill). Before being placed in its current setting, it was double-sided; the other face is displayed in the head office of the STM. |
