George Juhasz

Signature of George JuhaszBorn: 1933, Hungary

George Juhasz was born in Hungary in 1933, but left his country in 1956 to avoid the Soviet invasion. After living in Switzerland, he came to Montreal in 1961. He initially worked in a textile plant but was eventually able to reenter his field as an illustrator. He had already undertaken a number of public works of art before being approached by Jean Cartier to create the cartoons for Les Patriotes de 1837-38. Unfortunately, his contribution to this work was forgotten until 2004, when STM researchers were able to contact him.

He has lived in Vancouver since 1976, where he has done numerous illustrations for children's books, animated a number of films, and created several public sculptures for Vancouver institutions.
