Peter Gnass

Mural sculpture by Peter Gnass

Mural sculpture, 1978
Stainless steel
Height 10,7m × width 20,7m;
relief depth 3,3m
Location: LaSalle station, mezzanine

This huge work in brightly polished stainless steel covers an overhead wall, reflecting and scattering sunlight from a light shaft with its spiky angles, and mirroring the constant flow of passengers through the ticket hall below.

Sadly, when the station was inaugurated, the dignitaries congratulating those who had worked on the station forgot to mention Peter Gnass!

A more serious incident happened some time later, when the sculpture fell onto the mezzanine of the station. Fortunately, the station was closed at the time, so nobody was injured. However, the station was closed for several weeks while the sculpture was replaced and reinforced.
