Charles Daudelin

Born: October 1, 1920, Granby (Estrie)
Died: April 2, 2001, Kirkland (Island of Montreal)

Charles Daudelin was a pioneer both in abstract art and in the integration of artwork with architecture in public spaces. He worked in a wide variety of media, including painting, metal and ceramic sculpture, jewelry, and marionettes. He worked with Fernand Léger, and as a member of the Sagittaires art group was a forerunner of the Quebec Automatistes. His best-known contributions were to public art, including a vast variety of "1% works" for public buildings.

He was awarded the Prix Paul-Émile-Borduas in 1985 and the Ordre National du Québec in 1998. Rue Daudelin and rue de l'Artiste in Kirkland were both named for him after his death.

His son, Éric Daudelin, is also a sculptor.
